Ona, WHO, and CEMICAMP publish paper on the systematic process of transforming ANC guidelines into a reference mobile app
Ona, WHO, and CEMICAMP recently published Building a Digital Tool for the Adoption of the World Health Organization’s Antenatal Care Recommendations in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. The paper discusses the iterative process our teams took translating the WHO recommendations on antenatal care for a positive pregnancy experience into a reference mobile application built on top of OpenSRP.
Digital health is a cross-disciplinary field comprising global health academics, researchers, software engineers, designers, and scientists (data, lab, you name it). With so many collaborators, it’s no wonder digital health initiatives have their fair share of “lost in translation” moments so often described in project reports or discussed in retrospective meetings. As a response, we wrote this paper showcasing a collaborative process to help other digital health teams learn from our experiences.
Translating our client’s requirements into digital health workflows and apps that users love is our labor of love. That’s why, in 2018 when we started working with WHO to translate their ANC guidelines into a reference mobile application, we were thrilled to undertake the journey. Along the way, our cross-disciplinary and cross-continent team devised and formalized a methodology that got us from a 172-page reference guidebook to a standalone mobile application that includes WHO content and enables healthcare providers to effectively track a pregnant woman’s healthcare.
